Diversity in perspectives, backgrounds and experiences drive us to better serve society, enrich the design-build process and move us toward a more equitable and inclusive future. This document, which combines Universal Best Practices with water/wastewater best practices and implementing techniques, is the basis for Design-Build Done Right® in the water/wastewater sector. It also highlights unique characteristics of water/wastewater Owners, projects, procurement and the design-build team structure.
DBIA Position Statements
In fact, design-build has delivered design excellence on some of the most high-profile projects in the nation. DBIA® credential holders must renew their certification every two years. On December 31 of your two-year anniversary year, you must have accrued 24 hours of approved continuing education credit (e.g. whether you received your certification in June 2016 or November 2016, your renewal would be due on December 31, 2018). Visit the DBIA Learning Center for information on all our design-build education products.
LIBERTY NORTHEAST REGION
Only design-build delivers a comprehensive program with a “single point” of responsibility. Design-builders accept full accountability for architecture, engineering and construction. By knowledgeably pursuing design quality and effectively controlling costs and schedule, a design-builder ensures realization of concept-to-completion goals. Members span the entire spectrum of design and construction professionals, including architects, engineers, specialty contractors, owners, consultants, lawyers, business development professionals, students and teachers.
Associate Design-Build Professional® (Assoc. DBIA®)
This Deeper Dive document outlines the PDB delivery process and its key phases. DBIA conferences, specialty courses, archived conference sessions, webinars and Region programs are options available for individuals seeking elective credits. On occasion, the DBCB approves related courses from other industry associations such as USGBC and AIA. Individuals are welcome to submit similar programs for Board approval. Through years of experience and hours of education, these individuals have put in the time and work to become Designated Design-Build Professionals®.
The latest market analysis forecasting through 2026 shows that is especially true today as impressive design-build growth will continue, despite unprecedented COVID-19, supply chain and labor shortage challenges. It’s the fastest growing and most popular method used to deliver construction projects in America. As the only true authority on Design-Build Done Right®, we’re an organization where excellence is built, taught, and shared. By offering industry certification, education, and access to recognized experts across a multi-disciplined membership, we become the mentors of every member’s success. Use our online directory to find design-build firms and build successful teams. DBIA supports the use of stipends to help cover a portion of the design-build proposal costs and provide an effective financial incentive to increase competition.
Owners and industry alike are looking for certified pros for their teams, this is a good place to start. Actually design-build is better than design-bid-build at addressing this fear. Because the primary focus is price, there is little incentive to truly collaborate with local firms. Each spring design-build teams in both the water/wastewater and transportation/aviation markets meet in back-to-back conferences to address issues specific to their sectors. It’s a rare opportunity for Owners and industry to network, learn and share their unique sector design-build experiences.
They each provided a seamless service that included what we now refer to as design and construction or, more recently, as design-build. Once upon a time, design-build was considered an “alternative” way to deliver construction projects. These days, nearly half of all the nation’s projects are delivered using the design-build delivery method. DBIA is committed to help connect Owners and industry looking for qualified team members. Our one-of-a-kind Industry Match tool allows users to search an online directory of qualified design-build firms by region, market, specialties, Underutilized Business Enterprise (UBE) status, project type and more. Making the connections that build successful teams is easy and it starts here.

It’s easy to see why when you look at the benefits design-build delivers. University of California, Irvine residential project delivered a fast-track multiple package project with over 80 value items beyond the RFP. Projected to save $1.7 billion and 18 months over original state and federal project estimates. "There are often a handful of people in a company who know the status quo isn’t working, but it’s hard to change it on your own. DBIA is a group for those rebels to get together, learn from each other and try to change the industry." "It’s great being able to connect with other professionals tackling the same challenges you are."

The term is now the accepted way to reference a single-contract, team oriented and collaborative approach to delivering projects and has since been written into legislation, submitted as testimony and used throughout the industry. Favoritism or patronage is the opposite of design-build best practices. While design-build allows for the considering of factors beyond just price—such as team qualifications and project innovation—this is done to achieve best value and superior projects. In fact, the consideration of these factors has been shown to drive down cost, since they ensure that the team is reliable and produces quality work; something that is virtually impossible to decipher from contract price alone. Design-build can be used on projects of any size and type, and there are myriad examples of design-build project successes of all sizes.
DBIA gathers the nation’s leading federal sector design-builders each year for a one-of-a-kind conference for industry and Owners. The Federal Design-Build Symposium brings together key players from federal agencies and the design and construction industry for sessions focused on the challenges and opportunities we face on a national level. Elective hours are required for candidates pursuing the DBIA® credential. Candidates must fulfill 18 hours of elective credit which can be earned through DBIA courses, conferences, webinars or DBIA Regional programs. Tackle your courses all at once with this three-day intensive program that includes the core courses needed for certification along with access to the remaining core course online. The prices below include the certification application and one exam sitting fee.
That’s why industry leaders serving on DBIA’s market sector committees created these targeted resources to address specific issues impacting the Transportation, Water/Wastewater and Federal sectors. Start with the Universal Best Practices document and then use these targeted resources to deepen your design-build knowledge. You must earn the 18 elective credits within one year of Board approval.
Because DBIA delivers education and certification that drive not just business transformation but industry imagination, the organization inspires both projects and futures. DBIA ensures that everyone in its community—from practitioners to Owners to everyday citizens—takes advantage of the power of design-build so they can realize higher quality outcomes for today and thousands of tomorrows. DBIA’s mission is to promote the value of design-build project delivery and teaches the effective integration of design and construction services to ensure success for owners and design and construction practitioners.
