They each provided a seamless service that included what we now refer to as design and construction or, more recently, as design-build. Once upon a time, design-build was considered an “alternative” way to deliver construction projects. These days, nearly half of all the nation’s projects are delivered using the design-build delivery method. DBIA is committed to help connect Owners and industry looking for qualified team members. Our one-of-a-kind Industry Match tool allows users to search an online directory of qualified design-build firms by region, market, specialties, Underutilized Business Enterprise (UBE) status, project type and more. Making the connections that build successful teams is easy and it starts here.

Mentors will complete a short online profile that allows us to make a good match with a potential mentee. Mentee applicants (students, young professionals or existing industry professionals seeking specific guidance) will also complete an online application form to begin the match-making process. Once a match is made, DBIA will connect the mentor and mentee to begin their relationship. The Design-Build Institute of America Mid-Atlantic Region covers the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland. One of the truly vibrant and active regions for design-build activity, we offer many activities and events for those interested in learning more about design-build project delivery or advancing its use. DBIA has ensured that design-build remains in the industry’s lexicon by defining, teaching and promoting the process at every opportunity we have.
Collaborative Delivery Leadership Academy
By educating industry stakeholders and developing an ongoing knowledge base of best practices, construction professionals would enable owners to select design-build to achieve best value while meeting schedule, cost and quality goals. Today, largely due to the efforts of the DBIA organization and its dedicated proponents, design-build is now universally recognized as an effective, low-risk construction approach. In addition, candidates will need to provide three (3) professional references from the design-build projects mentioned in the application. Please note that these references will need to answer a few questions via DBIA’s online reference form which concern the related design-build projects. The candidate will need to contact the reference(s) and provide the link listed above.

The Design-Build selection process, conversely, puts in place a rigorous competition procedure that focuses on qualifications, experience, technical approach, price and other factors. This encourages a better competition that allows many qualified firms of all sizes to participate. The use of extensive prescriptive design and bridging documents eliminates many of the advantages inherent in design-build delivery, including the design-build team’s ability to meet or exceed the Owner’s needs through innovation and creativity.
Only design-build delivers a comprehensive program with a “single point” of responsibility. Design-builders accept full accountability for architecture, engineering and construction. By knowledgeably pursuing design quality and effectively controlling costs and schedule, a design-builder ensures realization of concept-to-completion goals. Members span the entire spectrum of design and construction professionals, including architects, engineers, specialty contractors, owners, consultants, lawyers, business development professionals, students and teachers.

Design-Build Project Delivery
Owners and industry alike are looking for certified pros for their teams, this is a good place to start. Actually design-build is better than design-bid-build at addressing this fear. Because the primary focus is price, there is little incentive to truly collaborate with local firms. Each spring design-build teams in both the water/wastewater and transportation/aviation markets meet in back-to-back conferences to address issues specific to their sectors. It’s a rare opportunity for Owners and industry to network, learn and share their unique sector design-build experiences.

DBIA will be the industry’s preeminent resource for leadership, education, objective expertise and best practices for the successful integrated delivery of capital projects. Offering certification in design-build project delivery to members and non-members alike, our program educates owners as well as designers and builders on team-centered approaches to design and construction. Owners want successfully executed design-build projects and are looking for a demonstration of relevant continuing education and experience — both of which can be gained through DBIA certification.
DBIA supports public-private partnerships as a potentially effective and efficient method to help address our nation’s infrastructure financing and delivery challenges. To be executed properly, a key component of a successful P3 is the implementation of design-build best practices as defined by DBIA, collectively referred to as Design-Build Done Right®. One application of design-build delivery is via a collaborative, multi-phased or progressive process (commonly referred to as Progressive Design-Build or PDB). PDB uses primarily a qualifications-based selection, followed by a process whereby the Owner then “progresses” toward a design and contract price with the team (thus the term “Progressive”).
The latest market analysis forecasting through 2026 shows that is especially true today as impressive design-build growth will continue, despite unprecedented COVID-19, supply chain and labor shortage challenges. It’s the fastest growing and most popular method used to deliver construction projects in America. As the only true authority on Design-Build Done Right®, we’re an organization where excellence is built, taught, and shared. By offering industry certification, education, and access to recognized experts across a multi-disciplined membership, we become the mentors of every member’s success. Use our online directory to find design-build firms and build successful teams. DBIA supports the use of stipends to help cover a portion of the design-build proposal costs and provide an effective financial incentive to increase competition.
In fact, design-build has delivered design excellence on some of the most high-profile projects in the nation. DBIA® credential holders must renew their certification every two years. On December 31 of your two-year anniversary year, you must have accrued 24 hours of approved continuing education credit (e.g. whether you received your certification in June 2016 or November 2016, your renewal would be due on December 31, 2018). Visit the DBIA Learning Center for information on all our design-build education products.
DBIA instructors are leaders in the industry, with real-world experience in the delivery of successful design-build projects. DBIA certification provides the only measurable standard to evaluate a professional’s understanding of Design-Build Done Right®. Take the first step to becoming a Certified Design-Build Professional® today. 3 professional references submitted in the online reference form detailing the candidate's design-build knowledge and experience. At least one must be an owner/client on a project included in the application. The original term for this delivery method was master builder, or master mason.
That’s why industry leaders serving on DBIA’s market sector committees created these targeted resources to address specific issues impacting the Transportation, Water/Wastewater and Federal sectors. Start with the Universal Best Practices document and then use these targeted resources to deepen your design-build knowledge. You must earn the 18 elective credits within one year of Board approval.
We personalize the experience you have with us, while keeping education options flexible so members can learn, collaborate, and translate design and construction best practices and connections into career and business opportunities. In 1993, a handful of the nation’s architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industry leaders got together because they knew there had to be a better way to bring a project from design to delivery. They didn’t invent the design-build process, but they set about to perfect it and to share it with a wider audience.
